Choosing Your Best Weight Loss Program

Look around the internet, magazines, daily papers and check out the advertisements for dieting. You will be bombarded with a multitude of weight-loss programs, clubs, plans, methods and more. If you can imagine a plan you can bet someone has an advertisement for it.

Dieting can be and often is very difficult. We can all easily recognise the fact that we are putting on some extra pounds or that we are already overweight. We can all readily agree that we need to do something about it. When we start to look at solutions we are often overwhelmed by the choices available. Surely they can't all be right.

Funnily enough they can all be right, different diets, low carb, high carb, low fat, high fat and on it goes. When you follow the advice you can usually succeed, often it is not sustainable. So what can we do?

First you need to determine what style of weight-loss program is best for you. We are not all alike, our personality traits influence the things we do and how we do them. Some of us work best alone, some are great team players, others need a bit of both. Some of us need external motivation to egg us along and others can set milestones and reach them by egging ourselves on.

So if you work best by yourself and are self motivated then a slimming group is probably not going to work for you. You will resent the action of attending meetings and sharing your weight-loss data with others.

On the other hand if you are a team player and / or someone who needs external motivation then the group approach is often ideal. You have the backup of others to share the journey with and to give you a nudge along the journey when you feel like giving up.

This is probably the first step you need to take, determine your individual style. Take a personality test, there are online options or books you can get from the library, you can even go to see a professional if that is the way you want to approach it. The results of this will give you a good indication of whether you are best served by joining a group like Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig or starting on an independent self directed program.

Next you need to determine what sort of diet you prefer. No point starting on a high protein diet if you don't like meat very much, there is no way you are going to be able to stick at it. The same applies if you hate vegetables, no point in starting a plan that is almost all vegetables and little else. So take a look at the diet options that the plan is offering, choose one that you can feel good about eating. Make sure you enjoy most of the foods in the diet.

If you are the kind of cook who measures out everything precisely and follows recipes to the letter then a highly structured diet is going to suit you. On the other hand if you like to throw a bit of this and that together they you need a diet that is along the lines of 'a handful of pasta', 'a palm sized steak', something a little less precise but still gives you a good indication of what is an appropriate serving.

Exercise. Like it or not, this needs to be part of your plan. Once again you need to be truthful with yourself. What type of activities do you enjoy doing? Are you a walker, runner, team player, bowler, golfer, the list goes on. Perhaps you haven't taken part in much active recreation for a very long time. Think back to what you did enjoy. Give that another go. Failing that, try something new. Do a little research on recreational activities and if there is something that you think you will enjoy find out if there is anywhere you can get a 'taster' of the activity.

Tracking progress is a must. Is this a daily or weekly activity? Is it weight based or inch / centimeter based. Perhaps it is both. What is essential is that you need to give yourself some feedback. If you are the group person then you will get this at your meetings and you will also set your goals with the group and get encouragement from them. As an individual, private, dieter you need to record your goals and progress and put in place a method of encouraging yourself, giving yourself a pat on the back or kick up the butt.

Remember that a weight-loss program is not in itself the only goal, but the need to maintain the desired weight is. So you need to be happy that this is a lifestyle change you can always live with. The last thing you want to do is lose the weight, give up the diet and pile the weight back on again.

Here are 2 exercise options for weight loss that you don't want to miss. You don't need to get to a gym and you don't need to be bored out of your mind when exercising. 1. Simple jumping jacks during tv commercials

I hear a lot of time from my clients about how they're so busy and can't fit in exercise. Sure, yeah right. We're all busy, but some of us still find a way to fit in exercise. They should instead say they're not motivated to fit exercising into their day. But ok, whatever. I'll hit them with this then. I'll tell them to do jumping jacks during tv commercials... at least 5 different tv commercial breaks.

Since I know that each commercial break lasts about 3 minutes and they'll do that 5 different times, that's 15 minutes of exercise they slipped into their schedule without any problems. I urge you to do that. Or if you want to up the level a bit, jump rope instead.

2. Do 6 sets of 25 bodyweight squats

This is a great exercise that doesn't require any weights. Just you and your body. Squat up and down. Be sure to squat down deep enough. There's no point cheating on this exercise since nobody is watching and you'll only be cheating yourself. If you do these sets all together, be sure to rest 45-60 seconds between sets. But you can space them apart through the day and night. Just get all the sets and reps in by the end of the day.

Temptation is obviously the biggest road block to losing weight and keeping it off. There have been countless books that talk of willpower, positive thinking, etc. but if these were enough alone everyone would be in great shape.

First I want to ask you a question. What do you think of when I say, "Red barn?" That seems like a silly question doesn't it? When I have asked this of others, some picture flying over a red barn, others picture driving by a red barn and yet others picture putting something into a red barn. The point is they all see a picture of a red barn, not the words red barn. That is because your mind thinks in pictures, not words. If your mind thinks in pictures that means you spend your whole day visualizing, interesting. I figure if I am going to spend my whole day visualizing, I might as well use it to my advantage (this is the point where I like to interject the Bible passage, "faith without works is dead." God gave us an unbelievable gift in the human mind. When you think of something positive or negative you are actually placing a positive or negative picture in your mind. Your mind works so fast most of the time you are not even conscious of it.

If you combine your faith in God and the works part (using your mind to picture to your advantage) you will be blown away by the results.

The exercise I am about to explain to you didn't come from me, it was what I call a God thought. It was pure inspiration from God.

This exercise can be done with your eyes open or closed. In fact, it is more effective if you can do it with your eyes closed, but if you are driving or doing something else while you do the exercise, PLEASE KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN! Wait until it is safe to do it with your eyes closed.

Ok, here we go. First, I want you to think of a junk food, a food that you crave, that when it is around you can't stop eating it. Got it? Ok, now guess who is standing right in front of you? The devil! He has beady eyes, a sinister snarl on his face and is grotesquely over weight. His belly hangs way over his pants. In his hand is the junk food you crave. He reaches out to you with this hand, offering the junk food to you and says in a creepy voice, "Go ahead and have some, you know you want some."

Now I want you to think of a healthy food you enjoy. Got it? Guess who is standing right next to the devil, it's Jesus! He is looking at you with loving eyes and has the most beautiful smile you've ever seen. He reaches out to you offering you the healthy food and says, "You know, this is much better for you, but it is your choice."

That's it, that's all there is to it. You can do this with any problem foods you have. The whole exercise takes about 15 seconds. Now let's say you spend a whole 2 minutes a day doing this exercise. That means you do it eight times a day (15 seconds each) spread throughout the day. Guess what will start to happen? When you think of the junk food, the picture of the devil offering it to you will pop into your head. When you think of the healthy food the picture of Jesus offering it to you will pop into your head.

Abdominal Weight Loss... Losing Fat From Your Middle

As an exercise guru once stated, "Everyone's got Ab's you jus' need to show em". From the frantic efforts in gyms and obsessions with the so elusive six pack, it seems many never quite got what he meant.

The most noticeable part of a fat person is quite often the stomach but its disadvantage is much more than cosmetic. And apart from being concerned about the loss of aesthetics, it is also reasonable to get concerned of a fat midsection

A fat abdomen not only results to larger pant sizes, it is also a serious health issue. It points to your state of degenerating health. Accumulation of body fat mainly around your midsection (commonly referred to as apple shaped, as opposed to pear shaped that has fat around hips, buttocks and thighs) is more dangerous than any other fat distribution. It is associated with increased risk of heart disease, Type II diabetes and other diseases that often accompany obesity.

However the notion that you can lose fat specifically from the stomach area only is unfounded. Spot weight reduction is really a myth. You just cannot loss weight from one specific area of the body. A good example of how one loses body fat is given by the fat-loss expert and body builders, Tom Venuto.

He explains losing fat is like empting a swimming pool. The last part of the pool to get covered by water when filling it up will be the first part of the pool to show up when emptying it. On the contrary the first part of the pool, the deep end, which fills up first, will be the last place to empty.

Another example would be the loading of a truck container with sacks of potatoes. The first sacks to go into the container will be at the furthest end. The last sacks would be closest to the door. On unloading the first sacks to be loaded will be the first to be unloaded while the first to be loaded will be the last to be unloaded.

Similarly in losing weight the last place you deposited fat will be the first place you lose in. And the first place you deposited fat will be the last place to lose it.

Unfortunately, for most of us, the first place we deposit fat is in the abdominal area. This is particularly so for men. Women tend to have first deposits in thighs and hip area also. This distribution of body fat then translates to mean that abdominal fat is usually the last body fat to be lost.

Though this is roughly the way the body distributes fat, obviously it is not as simple. Your body does not store fat at the abdomen and say, Ahha! That's full, lets' start depositing in the under arms. But on the other hand, it doesn't necessarily distribute body fat equally around the body. Depending on your genetics the body will deposit fat in different parts and at different rates. Often some part will have more deposits than others. However you will rarely see a fat person who does not have a large abdomen.

To see your abdominal muscles you will need to cut down on your total body fat. More crunches will just not do it. Yes the crunches do develop the muscles, unfortunately they will still be under two inches of sub-cuteneous fat. And most likely a one pack was not exactly your idea of attractive.

Hummus

1 can of chickpeas (19oz or 540ml), rinsed and drained
1/3 cup of tahini (sesame paste) - use 1/5 cup for the weight loss purposes
Juice of freshly squeezed half lemon
1 garlic clove, minced
1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
a pinch of paprika mild

Process chickpeas with cup of spring water to puree in a blender. Add tahini, lemon juice and garlic. Mix well. Garnish the top with parsley, olive oil and paprika.

Orange drink

1 cup of orange juice
cup vanilla rice milk
2 tablespoons of soft tofu
1/3 of banana (to sweeten) or add 1 teaspoon of honey
1 teaspoon of grated orange zest
2 peeled orange segments

Mix everything together in a blender.

Roasted Eggplant

Roast the whole eggplants with skins turning them occasionally till the skin turns black. Let it cool. Peel it off and remove the darkened skin. Process in food processor till smooth.

You can add to it 1 clove of crushed garlic or 1 chopped onion, 1 tablespoon chopped parsley and 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil.

Another way to serve roasted eggplants:

After roasting the eggplant, dice it into small cubes, dice 1 medium tomato and 1 medium onion, add 1 tablespoon of chopped parsley and 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil. Mix well together and serve.

Weight Loss - Emotional Triggers

A "trigger" is something that sets in motion a sequence of behaviors. Many times we regret how we react to these triggers which may trigger other emotions. We're start playing the song that never ends. What feelings trigger overeating or unplanned eating for you? How do you react to these emotions? It's not unusual for people to eat when we're happy, sad, angry, frustrated, lonely or bored. Emotional eating may make us feel better for a moment but, the effects last a lot longer.

Believe it or not there's a positive intention behind every behavior, even though what we're doing may seem negative or not helpful at all. I know it's hard to believe. What possible intention might there be by me consuming a container full of cashews. The fact is that we're doing it because it benefits us in some way or we wouldn't be doing it. However, if we are to control our weight we need to control the food that's controlling us and we can do that by managing our feelings in a way to get the same benefit without food.

What benefit do you get from eating when stress, bored or sad? Now, what non-food behaviors will give you that same benefit without eating? For instance when we're bored we tend to look for something to eat not because we're hungry but because we're looking for something to do even if what we're doing is watching TV. What we're really looking for is something to do with our hands. So, pick up needle point, a cross word puzzle, paint your nails or whatever else interests you other than the fridge.

Emotional eating doesn't really resolve the feeling, it often makes it worse. Yet, we continue to do it. If you cut your finger would you stick it in a jelly doughnut hole to make it better? Of course not because we know we need a band-aid to stop the bleeding but, we'll eat that jelly doughnut to make us feel better.

To help manage our behaviors ask these questions:

  • What behavior do I want to change
  • What does that behavior get for me
  • What other way can I get that same benefit without food
  • What other way will I try

Unless you try another way nothing will change because sticking a bleeding finger in a jelly doughnut doesn't work and neither does emotional eating. Recognizing emotional eating when it occurs will help you find better ways to manage your feelings than by eating. Stop feeding the emotion that's eating you.

Stop Your Diet Without Gaining Weight!

To maintain your weight or to lose weight, you must have a routine diet which contains healthy, fiber-rich, low fat/calories food everyday along the week. So, when the weekend comes, you probably want to skip your strict diet for at least 2 days, to enjoy chocolate cake or pizza with your friends or family. Yumm..!

But...wait a minute! How about my diet?', you'll probably ask yourself. Don't worry, you don't have to skip your diet with a guilty feeling as if you've cheated to yourself! Skipping diet won't cause you weight gain if you do it according to these rules...

1st Rule - Are you REALLY hungry? Check whether your hunger is physical or emotional hunger

This might sounds a bit funny to you! Of course you know and feel when you are hungry, but sometimes your brain could 'cheat' you by giving a false 'hungry' signal to your stomach, or often called as emotional hunger.

The following are 5 ways to check whether you have an emotional hunger:

1. Have you had a drink within the last one hour? Have a drink, and wait until 15 minutes later. If you still feel hungry, have something to eat then. It means you're really hungry. Thirst and hunger often have same signal to your body.

2. Hunger signal comes frequently to tell your body that you need to eat. If you suddenly feel very hungry out of your usual meal time, or when you see some tempting foods display, it might be your brain that do the 'talks' or often called as emotional hunger. Try to get busy with some activities, and if in 10 minutes you still feel hungry, it means that's a real hunger.

3. Emotional hunger usually makes you eat more than what your body actually needs. When you have finished your meal, you would realized then how much calories you had taken, that would at the end make you feel guilty. How to overcome it? Take always very light portion of everything you want to eat! That way you have satisfied your brain with the good taste of the food. On the other hand, if you feel you've had had enough after that, it means your hunger is emotional hunger.

4. When you are emotionally hungry, you will feel guilty after finishing your meal. Therefore, before having your meal, ask yourself honestly whether you can feel satisfied after the meal, which is the signal of natural hunger. By thinking logically, your emotion will stay away.

5. If you feel hungry, but feel that only certain food (usually very sweet or salty or full of lat) can satisfy your hunger, you are emotionally hungry. Be careful! It's better to take any healthy food (i usually prepare an apple in small slices on my working desk, which I can eat slowly when I get emotional hunger). Eat fruits or smoothies to replace chocolate ice cream or double cheese burger that you really want!

2nd Rule - Don't skip breakfast!

Start your day by having a healthy breakfast everyday. Eating 3 times a day will help you to control your hunger, thus keep you away from eating too much.

3rd rule - 80/20 Habit

Eating calories-rich burger on weekend ? It's ok, as long as you do the 80/20 Habit. Meaning that you must spend 80% of your life by having healthy foods, doing healthy activities, while at the weekend or holidays take your 20% credits to eat whatever you like. But, here discipline is a must! When the weekend or holiday is over, you must return to your 80!

4th rule - Eat little by little

Always involve your taste when you eat! Never eat too quickly! That way you will just put the foods into your mouth, and stop when you are already too full. Instead, try to enjoy your food slowly. Eat a bite after a bite, and focus your mind to its taste. Enjoy it, let both your brain and mouth be satisfied. After 3 first Bites, you will feel that the food become ordinary. That's the signal that your body has enjoyed the food enough, and now it's time to stop. But, again...only your commitment can prevent you to avoid the guilty feeling and start to eat again!

5th rule - Dining Out

These are rules when you are dining out to a restaurant or a party that will prevent you to eat too much:

- Eat fruit or drink juice or yogurt before leaving for the party. That little snack will keep you from being starving when you are in the party or restaurant, which will make you eat more than what you actually need.

- Dining with friends or colleagues? That's fun, but try to order your dishes before anyone else. People tend to eat more when they are dining out with many people!

- When you have finished your meal while everybody else is still eating, ask the waiter to take your dish right away. This way, your friends cannot 'force' you to eat more!

- If you want to have some dessert, share with somebody else.

- In a standing party which serves many kinds of dessert, keep your commitment to have only 1 dessert, then give your plate away to the waiter.

Now that you have already knew the rules of having fun in the weekend, you stop your diet without failing guilty!

Stupid Exercises For Fast Weight Loss

I have a few "stupid" exercises for fast weight loss. These aren't the typical run-of-the-mill exercises. You probably haven't heard of these or are barely familiar with them. That's good... keep an open-mind and you'll benefit from this information. Take 2 minutes right now to finish up reading this article.

Stupid Exercises for Fast Weight Loss

1. Spinning in a circle

Yes, this works. No, it's not the typical type of exercise. It does very little as far as burning calories. That's not where it's power comes from. It comes from how it alters your hormones. Hormones are your secret weight loss weapon. If they're balanced, you can lose weight at will. If they aren't balanced, you're going to have some major problems with losing weight.

So what I want you to do is spin around with your arms out and do this for 5-10 spins to start with. Get slightly dizzy. This will take a few practice spins to figure out the point of "slight dizziness". Fine, do it and find out. Once you do, start spinning around at least 5 different times with that number of spins... daily.

This exercise is an Endocrine System exercise. What I mean by that is that it helps your Endocrine System out in being able to figure out how much and when to release hormones into your body. Kinda complicated, but the only way for you to see if it works or not is to do it. What are you waiting for?

2. Standing long jumps

Ok, you kinda know this one, but you didn't realize it's good for weight loss. To make this a weight loss exercise, do these jumps really fast. Jump as far as you can. Turn around and jump back to where you started. Do this for 1 minute non-stop. Rest 45 seconds and repeat for a total of 3 sets. This helps tone the legs, besides helping with weight loss.

How to Lose Weight by Running!

Here's how to lose weight by running. If you're jogging... STOP! Don't do it anymore since it's a complete waste of time and doesn't really help you burn off fat and lose weight. How to Lose Weight by Running

1. Run up some stairs

Look, typical running/jogging on a flat surface sucks because it's steady-state cardio. You need to push yourself with running in short bursts of high intensity and then back off a bit and go at it with a lower intensity. You can do that with stair runs. If you have stairs in your home, do the following.

Run up them and then walk back down. Keep repeating this for a total of 5-15 minutes... depending on what kind of condition you're in. The running up the stairs is the high intensity while the walking down the stairs is the low intensity (active rest). There is no in-between... like jogging. Do this 3-5 days a week.

2. Do sprinting and walking intervals

This is simple. Outside on your sidewalk you can run hard for 10 seconds or so. Once you've done that, walk for the next 45 seconds. Keep repeating these high and low intensity efforts for 10 minutes. If you did these 2-3 times a week (less than 30 minutes a week total), you'll get some incredible fat burning. You'll see the results within 2 weeks also.

This is the best way on how to lose weight by running.

The Weight Loss Lie That Might Be Causing You to Gain Weight

Any time you visit a website on weight loss or fitness programs, you're likely going to read a lot of theory about what works best for fast weight loss. Anyone who has been around the weight loss block a couple of times also likely knows that quick fixes don't work and there are also a host of other factors that could hinder the progress you make with your diet or workout program.

But there is one weight loss lie in particular that tends to trip people up and because of this, they might actually start gaining weight. Obviously this is a huge problem that needs to be solved immediately if you want to be getting optimal results.

So, what is this lie?

The Meal Frequency Myth

Ever heard the saying that if you eat six small meals a day you'll speed up your metabolism?

Likely have - it's a popular one and one that dieter after dieter follows to a 'T'.

Now, this myth isn't not entirely incorrect but in most cases, unless you really understand it, it is going to hurt you.

The Truth About Meal Frequency

Okay, let's first look at how this notion got started. It's been scientifically proven time and time again that when you consume food, your body is going to burn energy digesting that food. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Digestion is an activity and activities burn calories.

Now, what some people may not realize is different foods will cause the body to burn more calories than others.

Sorry to disappoint but there are no negative calorie foods - but protein rich foods will cause a 25% increase in metabolic burn (you burn 25 calories for every 100 you eat of protein), while carbs and fat come in at 4 and 2% respectively.

So, by those factors, it's clearly obvious that high protein meals do speed up the metabolism.

But here's the kicker.

How much your metabolism will speed up (given similar macronutrient conditions - the meals consist of the same types of foods in other words) is strictly related to the size of the meals.

Eat a 600 calorie meal or eat a 300 calorie meal. The 600 calorie meal will boost your metabolism twice as much as the 300 calorie will because there is twice the amount of calories to digest.

Now, this looks great - eat more food, increase your metabolism higher. Right?

Wrong. While the metabolism does increase, it's in no way going to increase so much to overcome the increase in total calorie intake at the end of the day.

If you had 6 meals of 600 calories, that's 3600 calories that day. If you had 3 meals of 600 calories, that's 1800 calories. Big difference.

Also note that if you took those 1800 calories in the second situation and made that into six meals (300 calories each), now you're burning half as many calories digesting each meal after it (since the meals contain half as many calories) hence your daily metabolic boost in each situation equates to the same.

So big meals or small meals, when total calories are the same, you're experiencing the same metabolic boost at the end of the day. The only difference is you'll get a bigger metabolic boost less frequently after big meals and a smaller metabolic boost more frequently after small meals.

The problem though comes in when people don't keep calories steady. So, rather than halving the calories say to 300 per meal and still eating 1800 each day, they eat more frequently but keep calories higher - say 400 or 500 calorie meals. Now you're left with a daily total calorie intake that is too high and weight loss stops.

In that situation, this meal frequency myth will definitely hinder your weight loss goals.

So, to summarize this point, yes, eating more frequent meals can help keep hunger levels under control and help you stick with a diet, but you must be sure these frequent meals are actually smaller, otherwise, you're not going to be losing weight at all, you could be gaining it.
